Established in 1938 under private ownership, Carew & Co. (BD) Ltd is one of the oldest mills in Bangladesh which came under the control of BSFIC immediately after independence.
Carew & Co.(Bangladesh) Ltd. is situated at Darsana of Chuadanga district. It was established by private entrepreneurs in 1938 and has a sugar mill, one Distillery and one Pharmaceutical unit under its ownership. Machinery & equipment of the sugar mill were supplied by M/S Blairs Ltd.of Glasgow,U.K.It started trial production in 1938-39.
The original cane crushing capacity of Carew & Co.Sugar Mills was 1016 M.Tons per day.After nationalization in 1973, the sugar mill was partially modernized during 1978-85 under Australian assistance at a cost of Tk 208.84 million. As a result,the economic operating life of the sugar mill increased for a few years and its daily cane crushing capacity also increased to 1150 M.Tons with corresponding increase in sugar production capacity to 11,500 M.Tons per annum.
Total cane-cultivable land in the millzone of Carew & Co.Sugar Mill is about 45,600 acres of which 15,600 acres per annum on average is brought under sugarcane cultivation.
The distillery of Carew & Co.(BD)ltd.has an annual production capacity of 2.80-3.00 million proof litre of spirit from mollasses which is used for making rectified spirit,denatured spirit,country liquor and 35,000/36,000 cases of foreign liquor.
