Reunion Island rum is now a stylish, sophisticated drink. A concentration movement has taken place over the years, there were 31 rum distilleries in 1928, and only three are left today—but production capacity has never been so high. This position was achieved through a joint policy of Reunion rum makers who decided to set up a GIE (Economic Interest Grouping) in 1972 with the view of structuring and developing the Charrette brand, a blend of Reunion Island traditional industrial rums. Since that time, boosted by dynamic cooperation and the Charrette success story, Reunion rum has sold around the entire world. The "Rhum Charrette" was born in 1972 and is the most famous brand of rum from the island of La Réunion. Its alcohol content is 49 % and it's made from molasses. In the last ten years, the three distilleries (Isautier, Riviere du Mat, Savanna) have undertaken a complete upgrade. To meet the new demands of international trade and new emerging lifestyles, particular emphasis has been laid on quality. Quality controls have been reinforced at each production stage, with improvements in the nature of “non-alcohol” substances during distillation. Considerable effort has been made for packaging and communication.

 

Production

Four million liters were packed in 2004 . The sales were 80% in La Réunion (including duty free ) and 20% for export, generating a turnover of 17 million euros.

Isautier

It is the island’s smallest and oldest distillery. This family business was set up in 1845 and is now run by the 6th generation of owners. The distillery has a daily production capacity of 70 HPA. Since its early days, one of its signature marks of excellence has been to produce agricultural rum. This makes it unique in Reunion Island. In addition to white and old rums aged 5, 10 or 15 years, the group produces a wide range of punches, spiced rums, spiced fruit and liqueurs.

1832 : Charles ISAUTIER arrives on Reunion Island.

1845 : Charles ISAUTIER buys the sugar-processing plant of CHATEAUVIEUX and sets up the ISAUTIER distillery.

1848 : Abolition of slavery.

1865 : Death of Charles ISAUTIER. His widow, Antoinette ORREE, takes over and gives the family rum production an international character.

1914 – 1918 : World War I : Increasing demand for rum from the colonies. Manufacture needs to be speeded up : rum is used in the manufacture of explosives, for hospital dressings and for pharmaceutical purposes. Rum is also popular with soldiers.

1922 : Setting up of quotas to limit the amount of rum exported by the colonies to mainland France.

1939 – 1945 : World War II. France is occupied and can no longer receive shipments of rum form overseas colonies. Virtually total blockade for products in and out of Reunion. At the end of the war, only one distillery and 14 sugar-processing plants/distilleries remain in activity.

1940 : Only one remaining distillery in activity : that of the Isautier family.

1946 : Reunion becomes a French département.

1972 : Setting up of GIE (Economic Interest Group) : The market is organised and the rum produced by the 3 distilleries is sold under the name Charrette.

1988 : Marketing of the 20cl flat bottle of Charette rum, to counter sales of small individual doses of rum in small shops.

2006 : As part of the campaign to reduce alcohol dependency, the degree of alcohol of the 20cl bottle is brought down to 40° (previously 49°)

2009 : Three distilleries in operation in Reunion : Savanna, Rivière du Mât and Isautier.

1907 Chatel, over a century of family tradition.

Rue Juliette Dodu in Saint Denis, Reunion Island. A pharmacist by profession, Jean CHATEL decided not to take over his father’s pharmacy in order to use the family premises as a distillery. In huge 250 litre wooden barrels, the preparations were stirred by hand and then sold in demijohns before being delivered by donkey carts. However, the distillery was only one of the different occupations that J. Chatel carried out. At the same time or successively an entrepreneur and a politician, he directed the Rivière du Mât factory and was an administrator for the Rhumerie du Bourbier. He was also president of the general Council of Reunion, president of the Chamber of commerce and finally mayor of Saint Denis during 20 years. Jean Chatel gained the nickname “Papa Chatel” thanks to his social accomplishments achieved as the mayor of Saint Denis. In 1930, he became president of the Reunion sports federation until 1937. With the support of his children Rémy, Jeanne and Gaston, he invested the local insurance market and created “La Préservatrice”. Jean Chatel died in his office at Saint Denis city hall on the 27th of April 1948. After his death, Chatel maintained its two activities of the family-run business: the distillery and the insurance company which both have kept on expanding until nowadays. As a tribute, one of St Denis’ main streets was named after him. 

 

1957 Jeanne Chatel at the head of the Distillery

Jeanne Chatel, the founder’s daughter, takes over the management of the distillery and decides to develop a new range of products. This is how the company’s range of punchs in bottles was created. Moreover, the handmade production being outdated it is replaced by an automated production line. In 1960, the company acquires its first bottling machine: “La Girondine”.

 

1975 Chatel moves to “Le Chaudron”

Thanks to its constant success the company rapidly outgrows its distillery in “Rue Juliette Dodu”, downtown St Denis and needs to seek a more appropriate location.

Chatel relocates to “Le Chaudron” in the outskirts of St Denis where it will have enough room to build a new production line in scale with its booming activity.

 

1981 Alain Chatel takes over the family-run company.

Alain Chatel, Jean Chatel’s grandson, has been managing the company since 1981. As the distillery’s Master blender, he creates all the new recipes. Nowadays, after a century of activity, the company continues passing on its landmark know-how and, in the same time expanding it’s locally made as well as imported product portfolio. Born in 1949, Alain Chatel witnessed most of his grandfather’s accomplishments. After his baccalaureate, he decides to study business management in order to follow Jean Chatel’s footsteps. He joins the distillery in 1973 and learns all the aspects of the company’s activity. In 1981, he takes over the management of the distillery. Trained by master blenders, he always keeps with him his grandfather’s recipe book while constantly creating new mixes and sharing his passion and know how. Very Linked to Reunion and its heritage, Alain Chatel gets his inspiration from local fruits to imagine new products and new flavors. Aware that a company must always be reactive in a perpetually evolving market, he is particularly attentive to new ways of consumption. With his impulse the company diversifies its product portfolio and opens up to export market opportunities.

 

1998 Acquisition of the Vue belle distillery.

Chatel acquires the Vue Belle distillery which manufactures liqueurs, rum-based creams all packed in original, innovative and luxurious presentations which have won many rewards. In 1990 “Pause Café”, with its fine gold printing, won the “Oscar of packaging”.

 

2006 Launch of Cubi Punch

A real innovation in punch history … A ready-to-drink blended punch, packed in 3 liters Bag in Box for practical use. The idea was simple but no other producer had thought of it! Chatel as a pioneering market leader for the last century was the first to make it. CUBIPUNCH was born and it was created in Reunion Island!

 

2007 100 years of history

Take a century of punch, add a hundred years of passion for Reunion Island, it’s sugar cane and fruit, blend in 30 devoted people, a multitude of recipes and one intense belief: “Create the punch in tune with our times” and you have the Chatel Distillery. Two golden rules guide the distillery day in, day out: quality & innovation. A success story that has only just begun…

 

2008 A new production unit in Sainte Marie.

A century of innovation later, the company produces up to 1.5 million of bottles per year and has just celebrated its century of existence. To prepare for the future Chatel decides to move for the second time in 25 years in order to optimize the production.

 

2010 And Chatel revisited the punch!

Alain Chatel reinvented the standards of traditional punch in order to better give justice to the expression of the tropical fruits from Reunion Island. At the same time, the distillery creates new trends of cocktails through its new range of surprising punches branded «les inédits»: the results of audacious mixes of fruits, flowers and vegetables.

 

2012 International Recognition

«Les Inédits», the last born cocktail range of J. Chatel Distillery, now enriched with two new flavors (coconut & hibiscus and geranium & cinnamon) have been seen at SIAL (International Exhibition for Food) in Paris and received the SIAL Innovation 2012 label.

 

2013 is part of a consortium that buys Quartier Francais Spiritueux Outre Mer, Distillerie de Savanna and Reunion Boissons.

A subsidiary of Groupe Quartier Français, Distillerie Rivière du Mât is located in the Beaufonds industrial site in Saint-Benoît. Its ageing storehouse is in Saint-Louis. Its production capacity is 400 HPA a day. It can process up to 70% of molasses produced in the island. Part of its production is put in store for ageing: it is used to make a whole range of old rums aged 3 to 10 years, and even more.

Built in 1875, the sugar mill Quartier Francais was one of the most productive and most centralized of this time. Today it is part of the Gol factory in St. Louis.

 

The first modern "central plant" was built in 1875 on the left bank of the Saint John River. The plant received cane from all farmers in the region. Almost all small sugar factories stop their activities. The plant then produced 3,500 tons of sugar and was the largest employer in the county. A catastrophic accident occurred February 16, 1899 causing a huge fire. Supports of a 25 000 liter tank of rum breaks. The tank sprays rum on a lit still and starts burning. The fire is hard to control and completely destroys the factory. 9 people are killed. There remained only 4 sugar mills in 1880, when factories consolidate again, and in 1917 there is no longer Quartier Francais.

 

In 1920 the heirs decide to sell the plant. It was purchased by the Mauritian Company Compagnie Maurice-Réunion. Then it was bought, October 23, 1923, by a group of farmers in the region including Philidor and Ivrin Payet, two brothers from Salazie. Rene Payet, a son of Ivrin was the director.

 

The distillery was totally refitted or rebuilt between 1925 and 1955. However the sugar factories close one after the other, there is not enough cane for too many factories.

 

In 1960 the company buys Distillerie Rivière du Mât . Quartier Francais Spiritueux Outre Mer produces and sells rum. The company was incorporated in 1971 and is based in Sainte-Suzanne, Reunion. In 1982, despite a bumper crop of 280 600 tonnes of cane crushed for production of 27,000 tonnes of sugar and 8000 tonnes of molasses production is stopped at Quartier Francais. The company merged with the Distillerie du GOL in St. Louis a few years later. In 1994, la Société Léonus Bénard Sucrerie - Distillerie du GOL merge to become the "Sucrière de La Réunion" a branch of Groupe Quartier Francais and owner of the Gol factory. [9]

 

2013 Societe des Vins et Spiritueux La Martiniquaise S.A.S. has agreed to divest Quartier Francais Spiritueux Outre Mer, Distillerie de Savanna and Reunion Boissons to a consortium. The consortium includes J.CHATEL SARL, Terroirs Distillers, Unigrains and a businessman named Adrien Bellier. The financial details of the transaction were reportedly not disclosed.[10]

A subsidiary of Groupe Quartier Français, Distillerie de Savanna was founded around 1870. In 1992 it was relocated close to the Bois-Rouge sugar mill and power station (Compagnie Thermique de Bois-Rouge) in Saint-André. This efficient, state-of-the art facility has a 300 HPA daily production capacity. It was granted ISO 9001 quality certification in 2003. The best part of its production is marketed in bulk, but it has also developed its own brand: Savanna. It is one of the world’s only four distilleries producing “full flavour” (or high-bodied) rum.
