I attended the first Brewski Festival, Brewskival 2016, in Helsingborg, Sweden yesterday. It was a nice event with a lot of different micro breweries invited. I liked the variety of it. Entrance was approximately 12 US dollars and you got a tasting glass included in the price. There were a live band and food inside consisting of smoked meat from Holy Smoke, burgers from Garage and hot dogs.

Attending Breweries (copied from Brewski's Facebook page since there were just too damn many to try to get the names on site)

I hope it will be an annual thing since it would be nice to go there again. In the beginning I thought the tasting glasses were a bit small for beer but in the end I do think the size is great since there were so many different varieties to test. One thing to improve would be more water tanks to flush the glasses between beers, this year they only had two.

2016-08-25 Update http://tastersguide.com/index.php/component/k2/item/100-2016-08-25-update http://tastersguide.com/index.php/component/k2/item/100-2016-08-25-update

Hello there...

My guess is that nobody will read this. The site has been down for a looong time by now. Both due to lacking time and interest on my part but also due to massive spamming that got my ISP to make me take it down.

I hope I will get active with writing again. My interest for beer, wine and spirits is still there but I have not written a lot.

I started another project about rum producers that I first had on a separate site, then I moved it here and a couple of months ago I moved it to a wiki site where I think it will work best. I will clean out those parts from this site and just link to the wiki I think. I hope I will become a bit more active again since I actually enjoy writing...

Mainstay International

 Year closed:

 Owner:

 Web page: http://www.mainstay.co.za/

 Mail address:

Type of still: Continuous column still

 Production capacity:

 Location:

 History:

It was created in the cane fields of KwaZulu-Natal and originally known as 'gavine' or 'mystery liquor'. As the name implies, cane spirit is distilled from fermented molasses, by the continuous column still method. Mainstay was launched in KwaZulu-Natal in 1954 and attained national status by 1967. Initially, it was sold in local shebeens to an Indian and black market. From the mid-1960s, a growing number of consumers in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, started taking to cane spirits. [14]

“The production process is identical to vodka, using the same continuous column still, with the base ingredient being either molasses or sugar cane. Mainstay Original Premium is five times distilled. Cane spirit production in South Africa follows the same laws as vodka production in the U.S. and Europe, which means that a cane can always be called a vodka, but a vodka can't necessarily be called a cane. Because of this, Mainstay Premium Original is judged as a vodka at international awards and, in 2007, won the International Wine and Spirit Competition award for "the World's Best Vodka.".”
