The Forgotten Casks
On May 2nd 2007 St. Lucia Distillers was struck by a major fire which destroyed our administration and blending facility. Mercifully most of our distillery was spared but we suffered great problems with storage space for our casks. In the melee that followed our cellar master, Mr. Cyril Mangal, was forced to find space for ageing casks in the most unusual places. Having done so the cellar team had a memory lapse and forgot the casks that had been laid down for our award winning rum Chairman's Reserve. These casks were discovered recently and upon tasting were found to contain a wonderfully complex rum which we decided to offer as a limited release.

I have both The Forgotten Casks and The Chairmans Reserve. I liked the Forgotten Casks better. A friend ordered a bottle for himself after tasting mine. A very decent rum for the price.
I think they did a really stupid thing with the marketing. It would have been much better to call it "The Chairmans Reserve XO" or something similar. If the forgotten casks still is available in a year or so it makes their claims regarding a limited issue seem as fake as they probably are. How many casks could possibly be forgotten? They might have gotten the inspiration for the issue from a few forgotten casks but I would be very surprised if all the rum here is actually forgotten. Had they Called it the XO or something they could continue to market it without looking fake.
The rum is good so it annoys me when they can't let the rum speak for itself. An extra aged, non chilled filtered Chairmans Reserve at a reasonable price is a very attractive offering. Maybe they are trying to copy the Angostura 1919 marketing?
Smell: A bit oakey, no sweetness or alcohol in the smell
Taste: A very full, smooth tasting rum. Found hints of licorice in it which surprised me.
I warmly recommend this rum. It's a great buy at it's price. I rate it at 4/5 and will buy it again if it's still available when my bottle is finished.
